To be eligible for the Ron Brown Scholar Program, applicants must:

  • Be African American or black students.
  • Be current high school seniors at the time of application in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
  • Have a minimum 3.5 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Plan to attend a four-year accredited college or university in the U.S. full-time.


The Ron Brown Scholar Program selects up to 20 new scholars each year to receive:

  • $40,000 in financial aid ($10,000 per year for four years). Funds can be applied to tuition, room and board, books, and other educational expenses.
  • Mentoring and guidance. Scholars are paired with mentors and provided counseling on college selection and career opportunities.
  • Leadership development. Scholars attend an annual conference and complete summer internships to build leadership and professional skills.
  • Networking. Scholars join a network of over 600 alumni and have access to networking and career opportunities.
