The David Johnston–Lebovic Foundation International Experience Awards are being given by the University of Waterloo to the top candidates to help Canadian and foreign students. Faculties will choose which students are qualified based on how many awards they have. Students will be chosen based on how well they did in school, as shown on their entry to the graduate program.

Eligibility Requirements for the Scholarship

Those who want to apply for University of Waterloo Scholarships must meet the following requirements:

  • Languages Needed: English
  • All nations across the world are eligible.
  • Candidates are eligible to apply for these scholarships if they have strong academic status (often a minimum 70% average at the undergraduate level and a minimum 75% average at the graduate level).
  • Foreign students enrolled full-time who possess a valid study permit in Canada and are charged foreign tuition.
  • Typically assigned to students enrolled in research-based courses (major research paper, thesis).
  • Usually reserved for students starting their first term of study (term 1.0).
  • Students are required to meet the Faculty’s stated criteria for academic excellence.
  • Students must not have any unfulfilled probationary admission requirements and must fulfill the academic advancement requirements of their program.
  • This scholarship may be given in addition to other internal or external funding opportunities (such as the OGS, UW Graduate Scholarship, etc.). Note that sponsorship and scholarships are not the same thing; see the following bullet.
  • Generally speaking, students shouldn’t be totally or partially self-funded above the Faculty’s minimal levels of assistance, nor should they be concurrently receiving foreign government or agency sponsorship (e.g., China Scholarship Council, Libyan sponsorship, etc.).
  • Nominations for an IMAE are not accepted from students who are grandparents under the current IMSA scheme. Still, they are accepted by students who were previously given an IMSA for a master’s degree that they have completed.
  • Students’ applications for admission will immediately qualify them for this reward.
  • Departments and/or Faculty will establish their own internal procedure for choosing grantees in accordance with the allotment and eligibility requirements.
  • When necessary, faculties may set more stringent requirements for eligibility.

Benefits Of University of Waterloo Scholarships

The University of Waterloo Scholarships provide the recipient with the following benefits:

  • Awards from the David Johnston-Lebovic Foundation’s International Experience program can be as high as $10,000 for a two-semester work or volunteer program, $5,000 for a one-semester employment or volunteer program, or $2,500 for a one-semester study program.
  • Each term of the International Master’s Award of Excellence is worth $2,500, up to a total of $6,000.

How to Apply for University of Waterloo Scholarships

To apply for the David Johnston-Lebovic Foundation International Experience Award, please complete the steps outlined below.

  • Candidates need to be admitted to the university in undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Candidates who have already been admitted can access the application using their profiles’ forms pages.
  • Applicants are required to include a statement of purpose with their application. All applicants must show proof that they are proficient enough in English to be admitted.

To be considered for the International Master’s Award of Excellence, please submit the following application materials:

  • No additional scholarship application is necessary for students to be considered for this award; it will be done automatically based on their application for admission.
  • Scholarship recipients will be chosen and nominated by departments and/or faculties.

What are the eligibility criteria?

To qualify for most UWaterloo scholarships, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or international student.
  • Be entering your first year at UWaterloo. Some awards are also available for upper-year and graduate students.
  • Meet the minimum admission average for your program of choice. Higher averages will qualify you for larger awards.
  • Demonstrate financial need for bursaries and some department awards. It is not required for most entrance scholarships.

Apply by the stated deadlines for awards that require applications. Entrance scholarships are automatically assessed.

If I receive an offer, what next?

Congratulations! Make sure to accept your scholarship offer within the stated deadline to activate the award. Offers that require renewal each year will specify conditions you must meet to continue receiving funding. Entrance scholarships do not need to be renewed and are not based on maintaining a minimum average.
