The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has announced a two-week closure starting from Tuesday, July 30, 2024. This decision comes in response to the planned nationwide protests by various Civil Society Organizations and other groups set to commence on August 1, 2024.
In an official circular issued by the Office of the Registrar, the university management cited concerns for the safety of students as the primary reason for the temporary suspension of academic activities. All lectures, examinations, tests, and other academic engagements will be halted during this period.
President Bola Tinubu Appeals for Protest Cancellation
Students are advised to vacate their halls of residence immediately as the break begins. The university is scheduled to resume normal academic activities on Monday, August 12, 2024.
In a related development, President Bola Tinubu has made an appeal to the organizers of the protest to shelve their plans, assuring them that he is already working to address their concerns. The protest, which is expected to take place across the country from August 1 to 10, has been organized by Nigerian youths to show issues such as food scarcity and the inability to afford basic necessities.

President Tinubu urged the youths to exercise patience, promising an all-inclusive government and the payment of stipends to unemployed graduates. He emphasized his commitment to listening to the concerns of the populace and taking necessary actions to alleviate the economic hardships faced by Nigerians.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar Supports Protest
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has voiced his support for the proposed national protest, stating that such demonstrations are constitutional. Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has warned organizers to reconsider their plans, asserting that the police would not tolerate any form of breakdown of law and order.
Peter Obi Threatens Legal Action Against Allegations
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, has threatened to sue Tinubuās special adviser on Communications and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, for accusing him of being behind the protest. Obiās lawyer has demanded N5 billion in damages for the alleged defamatory statements.
UN Expresses Concerns Over Potential Violence
Additionally, the United Nations (UN) Department of Safety and Security has expressed concerns that the protests could be hijacked by groups with ulterior motives, potentially leading to violence.

In a local response, the Cross River State Government has placed security on high alert to counter any form of protest within the state. The government has warned against any actions that could lead to the destruction of public and private property or cause social and economic disorder.
